Charlotte Andergast, en internationellt framgångsrik pianist, har precis förlorat sin make Leonardo. Hans bortgång får henne att bestämma sig för att resa till sin dotter Eva. Där finner Charlotte även sin andra dotter, Helena, som hon hade placerat på ett mentalsjukhus men som Eva valt att ta hem till sig. Spänningen mellan Charlotte och hennes dotter Eva byggs gradvis upp under besöket tills en kväll då båda säger allt de har hållit inne med.
