The Summer House is an old tree-house, which originally came from "Grøliskjerpet". It was moved to Kvernan and in the 1880s. When there was built a new house here in 1950, it was moved to the location where it is today.
In 1991 we opened The Summer House as a café for the first time, and that was also the first real attempt to make Kvernan an interesting target for tourists, with a possibility to get guiding in the mill and the power station. At that time we had a small menu that consisted of waffles, ice-cream, coffee, tea and limonade. During the years we've added more and more products, and now you can get, among other things, waffles, «rømmegraut» (something like «sourcream porridge»), Pommes Frites (hot chips), ice-cream, coffee, tea and mineral water. We also have sweets and chips, souvenirs and usable art, in addition to stone-ground meal from the mill, of course.
The Summer House and the cultural development of Kvernan have got support many times. In 1997 Kvernan was chosen as a cultural memory in Flesberg. The Summer House has got money support from Flesberg every year since 1997, and in 1998 we got 10 000 kr (about $1250 or £835) from «Solofondet».
